Runner's Knee

Has anyone else had trouble with having "runner's knee" ?

I was jogging 2 miles two weeks ago and sprinted a bit towards the end and the next day my knee hurt very badly and I had to ice it for a week. The doctor told me I have runner's knee and not to run for another 10 days at least but do more fluid exercise like walking or bicycling.

Is there any way to strengthen my knees better so I can run/sprint without being worried that the same thing will happen again?
